Listed buildings and conservation
Sensitive architectural interventions that respect the character and heritage of historic buildings.
Working with listed buildings and within conservation areas requires a particular sensitivity to context, history and the layers of significance that give a building or place its character. Our work begins with understanding what is already there — its architecture, materials, craftsmanship, setting and evolution over time — before considering what can thoughtfully be added.
We have experience working with historic and listed buildings, developing proposals that respect their architectural significance whilst allowing them to evolve for contemporary life. Listed building consent is distinct from planning permission, and a thorough understanding of the building's significance is fundamental to establishing an appropriate design approach from the outset.
Within conservation areas, our approach is similarly rooted in the character of the wider setting. We consider not only the individual building, but its relationship with neighbouring properties, streetscape, landscape, materials and the qualities that make the area distinctive.
Our designs are carefully considered, and new elements are designed to sit comfortably within their historic context while remaining legible as contemporary additions. Through proportion, materiality, craftsmanship and restraint, we seek to create architecture that feels both appropriate to its setting and distinctly of its time.
We couldn't have asked for a better experience with Thurston King Architects. From the start, they really listened to what we wanted and took our ideas on board, while also suggesting clever and creative solutions we'd never have thought of ourselves. They were organised, professional, attentive and also made the whole process enjoyable. A genuinely great team to work with and we would recommend them to anyone.
